Extract Style from Function

16.09.2011

Extractor hoods no longer just provide the function of removing steam, smells and airborne food/grease particles during cooking, they can now be one of the most stylish appliances in the kitchen.

From chimney to telescopic, integrated to canopy, there’s an extractor hood to suit any kitchen design.

Try installing built-in lights to illuminate your cooking surface like the Elica Mini Om, which also has a minimum noise level and long life charcoal filter.

If you’re after something a little more glitzy, the Elica Star (above) will guarantee that your extractor hood is a focal point in the room. With three speeds and a booster illuminated ‘Magic Wand’ this re-circulating hood is as high performance as it is visual.

Some kitchens are more suited to a subtle chimney hood, which won’t detract from the overall design and descend from directly above the hob. The EFC90245X from Electrolux has push buttons and an aluminium grease filter so it’s functional and stylish.

Integrated Hoods consist of an extractor fan mounted behind a casing that matches your kitchen units which will look great in a minimalist or contemporary setting. The false front pulls open when you need to use the hood, activating the fan.

Guide to Buying a Built-in Oven

15.02.2011

Creme Lineaire Bank of ovens

The oven is integral to any kitchen so when it comes to buying one, you need to make the right decision.

But what should you be looking out for? What do you need to know? Check out our indispensable guide to buying an oven.

Firstly, always consider oven usage. For a person living alone, a single oven will most likely suffice. But if you have a family or enjoy entertaining you should choose a double oven as they provide the additional cooking space needed for entertaining or special occasions.

Steam ovens offer a number of benefits including the retention of vitamins and minerals in food while

cooking. However, steam ovens cost considerably more than a standard oven so unless you’re a fanatic cook or extremely health conscious, the money could be put towards other accessories such as a combi-microwave or wine cooler.

When installing a built-in oven, the height is determined by the position of the grill, known as ‘Eye

Level Grill’. This makes for easy access to both the grill and oven, and reduces the risk of injuries and spillages if you’re bending down to get food in or out.

One of the great things about a built in oven is that they give you the freedom to install the hob anywhere else in the kitchen. This means you can be even more adventurous with your kitchen design.

The hottest trend for this year is for a ‘bank’ of ovens. Rather than choose a double oven, the more aesthetically pleasing option is to install two single ovens adjacent to one another. You’ll find that manufacturers are now designing their kitchen appliances with this in mind by making sure that the control panels line up horizontally. You can also pick and choose appliances, such as a single oven situated next to a combi-mircrowave.

If you’re short on space, opt for a Hotpoint Openspace. This new appliance has revolutionised kitchen design as it offers 30% more space than a typical single oven, and comes with a dividing shelf so it can be used like a double oven.

And don’t forget about self-cleaning ovens – they are already huge in Europe, particularly France, so it’s only a matter of time before they catch on over here too!

12.01.2011

In recent years we’ve seen the rebirth of fashion from several decades including the 20s and 30s, even the rise and fall of the 80s-come-back.

In 2011 we’re set to do it all again, but this time it’s the 1970s that are taking the catwalks by storm – from boho style to a more sophisticated 70s look, there’s no escaping this massive trend.

This year Magnet has introduced a new retro 70s kitchen range that uses the latest on-trend greys combined with mellow mustards to create an authentic vintage look.

The Orbitz uses the latest curved wall and floor units combined with the sweeping curves of the Apollo Portland Grey worktop. Stylish clear acrylic handles ensure this cool, retro pattern can be seen at it’s best along side the Studio White kitchen.

Orbitz units can be used an accent with a number of Magnet ranges including Urban Gloss Noir and Cubista Wenge.

A New Range Cooker for the Kitchen

29.10.2010

Shelton range from Magnet

As the heart of the home, the kitchen is the hub of all family activity, and the best way to bring everyone together is a good hearty home-cooked meal.

That’s why choosing the right oven for your needs is an essential part of buying a new kitchen and nothing says ‘family kitchen’ like a range cooker.

A range cooker is a great foundation for an entire kitchen design – Aga styles look great in country kitchens and modern stainless steel range cookers are perfect in a contemporary setting.

The colour of the range cooker can be a starting point for the colour scheme for the kitchen. In Magnet’s Shelton the deeper cream of the range cooker warms and adds depth to the soft cream units. Alternatively, a contrasting colour can create instant impact and be a strong focal point for the room. For 2010 muted tones are set to be the hottest kitchen colours.

TOP TIPS FOR BUYING A RANGE COOKERRange cooker from Magnet

Do

  • Buy if you are passionate about cooking or have a large family to feed
  • Research what is the best fuel source for your cooker – gas, electric or dual
  • Work out how much it will cost to run your range cooker over a year before making a purchase
  • If you don’t enjoy cleaning, opt for an easy clean such as pyrolytic or catalytic oven

Don’t

  • Buy a range cooker if you have a small kitchen – they are pretty large and can overpower smaller rooms. Opt for a ‘mini range cooker’ instead.
  • Buy if you live alone or don’t do much cooking as you’re unlikely to make the most out of your cooker

Mount your Apple iPad in your Kitchen

21.10.2010

Apple iPad

We love our kitchen gadgets, that’s why we were delighted to see this new Cabinet Mount for the Apple iPad.

This amazing device by Griffin means you can access recipes, watch videos or listen to music whilst you potter about in the kitchen. And when you’re finished with it, you can tuck it neatly away under the cabinet, out of harms way.

The arm rotates 360 degrees and moves front to back 90 degrees, which means it’s very mobile.

The device can be mounted on the front, side or under the kitchen cabinet and we hear that installation is pretty easy – and it comes with all the instructions and hardware that you might need.

It’s custom designed to ensure your iPad will stay secure, and because it’s elevated, it’s safe from the usual kitchen spillages.

We think this is a great idea and can’t wait to get our hands on one!!

How long will your kitchen appliance last?

14.10.2010

If you’re thinking of buying a new kitchen, you want to invest your money in something that will stand the test of time.

We all know that trends come and go (while some seem pretty timeless!) but have you ever wondered how long your kitchen appliances will last?

Of course there’s no sure fire way of knowing exactly how long each brand or model will last – as it will depend on how much they get used over the years.

However, The National Association of Home Builders (in the US) tracks exactly this sort of information.

Last year, along with the Bank of America, research was carried called the ‘Study of Life Expectancy of Home Components’.

So, what did it find? Well here’s what you can expect…

  • Units: 50 years
  • Kitchen worktop (natural stone): Lifetime
  • Worktop (marble): 20 years
  • Dishwasher:  9 years
  • Disposer, Food Waste: 12 years
  • Tap:  15 years
  • Microwave Oven: 9 years
  • Electric range: 13 years
  • Gas range: 15 years
  • Refrigerator: 13 years

Of course these are only averages so there’s no need to panic if your fridge is 12 years old!!

Wine Coolers!

We all know that fridge space can be at a premium when you’ve got a large family. Our fridge is packed with delicious fruit and veg as well as every day necessities such as milk and a vast array of condiments.

And if you’re anything like me, during the summer months you never know who’s going to pop round so I always like to have a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge. Unfortunately – sometimes there’s not enough space!

That’s why at Magnet we love wine coolers. Not only do they look great, but they mean you’ll never have to drink warm wine again!

If you’re planning a kitchen, make sure you get yourself this must-have kitchen appliance!
